Barry if the new season started on May 27 as per calendar below:

2017-05-27	End of registrations for the 54th season
2017-05-28	Creation of leagues

How did a bunch of free agent players get signed before the start (May 23) of the new season?

It's not possible to sign free agent before the first game of the season

no, The first signed player did it on June 5

There were 8 skaters and 2 goalies signed on May 23, all you have to do is look at the signed players list under Alphasim World. The Timberwolves and killers each signed a goalie, the Timberwolves signed 5 skaters, and the farmers signed 2 while the charlatans signed 1. I would send a photo if I could attach one on here.
